Prison statistics on drug crime

It has been found that the majority of people in federal prisons in Pennsylvania and around the country are there for drug-related offenses. The prison population has grown 800 percent from 1980 to 2012, and this growth has resulted in some lawmakers calling for reform. Recently, the Senate Judiciary Committee passed a bill cutting back on mandatory minimum sentencing.

Mother sold drugs while children present, report says

A young Pennsylvania mother is facing several drug and other charges after law enforcement officials said they smelled marijuana emitting from her car and discovered drugs, handguns and ammunition in her possession. Police also alleged that the woman was involved in a heroin transaction from her vehicle while her two young children were seated in the back.

Court rules college had right to search dorm room for drugs

On Sept. 9, a Pennsylvania state court panel ruled that security officials from Alvernia University were within their legal rights to conduct a search and seizure in a student's dorm room. The Superior Court rejected a lawsuit that was filed against the university by a female student who claimed that the school had violated her privacy rights.

Pennsylvania police make breakthrough in synthetic marijuana case

Police in Pennsylvania have reported that a 61-year-old Spring Township man was taken into custody on Aug. 28 in connection with an investigation into the sale of synthetic marijuana in Berks County. Detectives say that they took the man into custody after an undercover narcotics buy in a Spring Township shopping mall parking lot. The man is alleged to have used his food, candy and tobacco distribution business to supply area convenience stores with the synthetic drug.

Man accused of selling hashish-laced goods at music festival

On Aug. 11, Pennsylvania authorities reported that a 35-year-old man was accused of distributing drugs in the form of baked goods at a music festival. The authorities who intercepted the goods that included chocolate, Rice Krispies Treats and fudge, stated that they contained hashish.

5 Pennsylvania men accused of selling heroin that killed 3

On July 24, five Pennsylvania men were accused of selling heroin to two men and one woman who overdosed and died. The individuals who were accused were identified as a 22-year-old Bridgeville man and four Pittsburgh men who are of the ages of 26, 54, 56 and 58.

11 charged following drug investigations in Pennsylvania

Several people are facing felony drug charges in Pennsylvania following a four-month series of investigations that shut down a heroin operation in the small community of Dillsburg in York County. On June 29, media sources reported that 11 people were taken into custody in the collaborative effort, which involved the Carroll Township Police Department, the York County Drug Task Force, the Cumberland County Drug Task Force and Pennsylvania State Police. Over 1,600 bags of heroin were seized during the operation.
