Grading of Criminal Mischief in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania law provides for a crime known as criminal mischief.  Criminal mischief is essentially damaging property belonging to another person.  Pennsylvania law provides a number of different ways this crime can be accomplished and also provides for various gradings.

Criminal mischief can range from a Summary Offense (if the property loss is less than $500), a misdemeanor of the third degree (if the property loss is greater than $500 but less than $1,000), a misdemeanor of the second degree (if the property loss is greater than $1,000 but less than $5,000), or a felony of the third degree (if the property loss is greater than $5,000).
