How to deal with aggression on the road

On Behalf of | May 5, 2020 | Personal Injury

Pennsylvania drivers should be aware of others on the road who are acting aggressively. The wrong move can cause these aggressive drivers to go over the edge in a road rage incident. The following are a few tips for defusing aggression, anger and impatience.

Drivers who find themselves growing impatient in a traffic jam should tell themselves they will not reach their destination any sooner for feeling that way. To relieve stress, they could listen to classical music. They should think about the health effects of stress, too. Simply gripping the steering wheel can result in headaches later on as it constricts blood flow.

Drivers should obviously not provoke the other by making hand gestures, flashing the headlights or honking the horn. They should not even look at the driver as this may be taken as an affront as well. Other times, they don’t want to offend the aggressive driver inadvertently, such as by slowing down or speeding up and consequently blocking a passing lane. To let someone pass, drivers should change lanes the moment it’s safe to do so.

It’s also important to keep a safe following distance with the vehicle in front, especially in a traffic jam. That way, if another motorist begins to violate their personal space, drivers may make a quick escape.

An aggressive driver may cause a personal injury, and if the injuries are so serious that personal injury protection cannot cover the losses, then the aggressive driver’s insurance company may have to face a third-party claim. Victims, for their part, may want an attorney to assess their case before anything else. With an attorney, they may have access to a network of crash investigators, medical experts and other professionals who can build up their case.
